One of the best plays I´ve ever seen in the NFL happened yesterday in the NFC Wilcard Playoff game between the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks. I was actually lucky to watch it as it happened.

I didn´t plan to see the game because it was 99% certain it would be a blow out (you can never be 100% sure in sports) but I had some free time before leaving to a friend´s wedding so I turned on the TV. There were still 6 minutes left on the game and to my surprise Seattle was winning 34 – 30!! Before I got to learn how that happened, on a play that seemed doomed to lose yards, Marshawn Lynch somehow got past the first couple of tacklers right in the line of scrimmage, then a couple more in the middle of the field, then the cornerback, then the safety (with a kick ass stiff arm throwing him to the ground not before flying like 5 yards back), then outrunning a defenseman on the sideline, and then cutting to the middle skipping by the safety for the touchdown.

Marshawn Lynch (RB, Seattle Seahawks)

It had all the elements that make me love sports; will, guts, teamwork, resilience, never say never attitude, drive, more guts, and of course, an upset (you know what I mean, the whole David vs. Goliath thing). The whole team running and doing whatever they could to help Lynch get to the end-zone (the offensive linemen AND the QB ran the whole 67 yards down the field trying to block whoever stood in front of them). That is called a will to win, especially since it looked like Lynch was stumbling and about to fall during the whole run.

You may say I am exaggerating and that it was just a wildcard game but the fact is the Seattle Seahawks are pretty much the worst team EVER to qualify to the playoffs in the history of the NFL (as their record shows 7 wins and 9 loses) and New Orleans was the defending NFL Champion. The line in Las Vegas was -11 for NO (which means that if you wanted to bet on NO they had to win by at least 12 points for you to make some money), which clearly states the difference between these two teams.

The fact that Seattle qualified to the playoffs (because of a loop hole in the rule book) leaving out a couple of teams with a 10 – 6 record is a big stain on the image the NFL has been creating about being a fair and balanced league. It will most definitely prompt a review of the rules in the offseason but for the time being Seattle playing at home in the playoffs is absolutely giving headaches to the NFL Comissioner Roger Goodell. I am sure that headache just turned into a full blown migraine with the upset yesterday, clinched by this very run.

If you haven´t seen it, do it now. If you have, watch it again in HD… it is worth it.

Here’s a great video of the play taken from the stands at the stadium.
